My great-grandfather was a marvelous horse trainer. I’ve heard stories about him since I was a little kid. They were always told in a tone that hinted at magic and adventure, and made me wish that I could have met him. I recently acquired a small, rawhide whip that belonged to my great-grandfather. When I hold it I feel like it somehow connects me to him, like it transcends time. I can hold it in my hand and know that he once held it in his. Most of the objects we bestow our affections on do this for us; they connect us to others and preserve memories. I believe photography does this for. In-fact the past year has made me believe this to the point of a it becoming a conviction.

Last summer, I was preparing to photograph a wedding in Oklahoma. The bride was a super fun girl who was very passionate about photos. We had long talks on photography. She had so many ideas and was excited to talk about different things that she loved to see in pictures. While was telling me how important the wedding photos were to her, and said, “Those [the photos] are our memories.”

I already fully believed that I was documenting moments in people’s lives, but I never really thought about it as specifically “memories”. That is exactly what photos capture. After many years have passed and our memories become a little more fuzzy or we forget a few things, we can look back at photos and have help remember that time. They are like the spark for the flame.

Another experience I had recently made me feel the value of photography. My mother-in-law lost her fight against cancer last July. She was an absolutely amazing and unique woman, and in the short time that I knew her, she touched my heart deeply. For her memorial service, we went through boxes of photos searching for the perfect pictures to remember her life. As we searched through the photos, I was continually struck by how powerful those images were. Simple things like a photo of her and my father-in-law sitting on the steps the porch drinking a cup of coffee, skiing with their boys, or celebrating holidays, normal everyday life events– memories.

And here we were rifling through a box of these memories. Through those photos, I was able to share in a past that I didn’t experience myself. I can see clearly in my mind’s eye a photo of my mother-in-law as a senior in High School. She was so beautiful and young– full of strength and life. Photos of marriages, babies, birthdays, pets were all there in those humble card board boxes. When we got done sorting photos and creating a display for her, I felt that we had been able to share those memories with others. Those boxes weren’t just filled with photos they were filled with loved-ones, events, and emotions. As we sorted through them I was incredibly thankful for every on of those photos.

Memories are powerful and precious. Photos are just the reflection of light on a piece of paper, but the reflection is of memories, and that makes them incredibly powerful too!

Second Shooter Wanted in Lubbock, Tx.

I am currently looking for a second shooter to help with weddings this year. This person must be extremely reliable and punctual– like a golden retriever who can read a clock!… wait, maybe that is loyal??? –You get the point. Applicants must have their own gear, preferably Nikon as that is what I shoot, but this is not a must. Applicants will need to submit a portfolio or link to their portfolio for me to review. If you have a photography business I would love to discuss working with you as a second shooter as well.
I am hoping to find someone who will be able to grow with my business as it grows. If you are a student, or trying to get into photography as your career I would love to help you on your journey. I believe photography is about much more than a photo. It is about creating moments, capturing moments, and building relationships. I believe this in my business and I believe this in my relationships with people. This absolutely applies to my second shooter.

Tuf Cooper and Rodeo Fame- a sneak peek from the photographer.

As many of you already know I have been working for Rodeo Fame Magazine as a writer and photographer. It’s really a cool gig because I get to meet some very interesting people, like Bobby Mote, Patrick Smith, Luke Branquinho, and Bob Feist… and of course because I get to do what I love! My last interview and photo shoot for Rodeo Fame was with the heartthrob of the Rodeo Word– you guessed it, Tuf Cooper.
When April and I arrived at the Cooper arena I was immediately struck by the fact there was a Pro Rodeo Champion a stones throw in any direction. To get to the Coopers’ arena we passed under an entry way that read “Roy Cooper 8 Times World Champion”. The next thing I noticed was Tuf’s rig that is adorned with his smiling face and the Cinch logo. With all of this fame and Tuf being in his early twenties I don’t know that I expected what I got. Not many people can handle fame and success, particularly at a young age, but Tuf Cooper is one of the most genuine and gracious people I have ever met. Instead of writing another article on Tuf for this blog I’m going to share a short list of things I discovered. But don’t forget to subscribe to Rodeo Fame so you can read the whole story!

The List:
1: Tuf has a work ethic that can’t be beat.
2: He has a great support group of friends and family that encourage him every day.
3: One of his favorite movies is called Warrior, which he says encourages him to go out and work harder.
4: When I asked Tuf what is the one thing he wants everyone to know about him, he said that he wants everyone to know that he believes in Jesus Christ. (And let me tell you this kid lives it… not in the smack you upside the head with a Bible sort of living it, but in the loving and caring for those around you, living a Christ-like-life, real-deal sort of living it.
5: Tuf and his brother Clif have a new healthy energy juice coming out very soon! It is called Tuf E Nuf and it actually is healthy AND gluten free (which makes me happy)!

The experience I had doing this photo session was one that I will never forget. I’ve been bursting at the seams waiting to share these photos with everyone; but when you shooting for a magazine is kind of like shooting bridal portraits, you can’t show them until after the wedding!

Cloudy Days Won’t Keep Us Down- Lubbock Family Photographer

Remember Sarah, the amazing woman that I blogged a while back? If you don’t here is a refresher: Sarah’s maternity session.
Well now you get to meet the rest of her beautiful blue eyed family, which consists of her sweet husband and two precious little boys. Just be warned her boys are A-dorable! We shot on an overcast day, which can make the saturation of color a bit weak, but I really enjoy the soft light you get in photos on days like this. So don’t shy away from booking a session in winter because you can still get beautiful photos that make you want to cuddle with your little ones!
I know I already posted this photo– but seriously– look at that face!

I think this photo is just precious! Big kisses from a little boy.

Floydada Senior Portraits

I have a chronic blogging problem. I’ve tried several times and several ways to fix it, but I always end up in the same slump. I call it “blog-lag”. You see, I religiously post photos on facebook, but I neglect my poor little blog baby. It is actually kind of embarrassing. I am a very neglectful mother to this needy little creature. It’s just that he is always wanting more words, and not just any words either, he wants them kneaded out to the perfect texture. It requires so much though. Facebook is just so much easier. So I always end up feeding facebook and forgetting about poor little Bloggie. It is quite pitiful– Bloggie I mean, but I know that it is all my fault. That being said, don’t be offended if I post photos a bit… or a lot late.
The photos I’m finally sharing today are from a session with a beautiful Floydada Senior. It was truly a pleasure to meet such a genuine, and kindhearted young woman. I hope that she like her photos as much as I liked taking them.
Isn’t she pretty!?
That is the one clump of green grass in Lubbock! You just think I’m joking.
I really wish I would have known about this wig shop when my mother in law was still here. I would have bought that green wig for her!

Between the cold weather and Starbucks’ Peppermint Mochas it is really feeling like Christmas. But we still have one weekend left before it arrives. So if you happen to be free this Saturday you should come out to “An Evening to Remember” hosted at the adorably wonderful Vintage Township housing edition in South Lubbock. There will be tasty treat, house tours, a silent auction, and several raffles. So come on out, take a look at some beautiful houses, and say “hello”. I’ll be the girl with the camera!

“You Can Do It”

“You can do it” is such an incredibly powerful phrase. It is something we hear all the time, often spoken in a nonchalant tone. We don’t really think about it, neither speaker nor receiver assign much meaning to it– but in reality it means so much.
“You can do it.” -Whatever it is you have been trying to do.
“You can do it.” -Keep going when life gets hard.
“You can do it.” -Grow your mind, feed your body, nourish your soul.
“You can do it.” -Something you don’t think you can do.
“You can do it.” -Become the man, woman, husband wife, mother, father that you want to be.
“You can do it.” -Become stronger.
“You can do it.” -Make the wrong decision.
“You can do it.” -Be stuck in complacency.
“You can do it.” -Make the wrong decision again.
“You can do it.” -Decide not to let that hold you back.
“You can do it.” -Whatever it is you have been trying to do.
“You can do it” is so much more than encouragement. It means that you have the freedom to make the right or the wrong decision. It is up to you. You can do it. One way or the other you will do something, might as well make it count!

Right now, I’m going to share some photos with you from my photo shoot with, Rookie, Drew Horner for Rodeo Fame Magazine. Then I’m going to wash dishes– even though I don’t want to.

The following photos are of Rodeo Fames inventory, owner, visionary, and Editor-in-Chief, April Bach-Patterson. (Oldest Daughter of Allen Bach).This Photo was taken right before our tire was stabbed to death by a curb and due to a long chain of events were stuck on the side of the road for hours!!! Oh the memories! I’ll say one thing though, when this girl sets her mind to something, it gets done. She’s pretty inspiring.
