“You Can Do It”

“You can do it” is such an incredibly powerful phrase.  It is something we hear all the time, often spoken in a nonchalant tone.  We don’t really think about it, neither speaker nor receiver assign much meaning to it– but in reality it means so much.
“You can do it.”  -Whatever it is you have been trying to do.
“You can do it.”  -Keep going when life gets hard.
“You can do it.”  -Grow your mind, feed your body, nourish your soul.
“You can do it.”  -Something you don’t think you can do.
“You can do it.”  -Become the man, woman, husband wife, mother, father that you want to be.
“You can do it.”  -Become stronger.
“You can do it.”  -Make the wrong decision.
“You can do it.”  -Be stuck in complacency.
“You can do it.”  -Make the wrong decision again.
“You can do it.”  -Decide not to let that hold you back.
“You can do it.”  -Whatever it is you have been trying to do.
“You can do it” is so much more than encouragement.  It means that you have the freedom to make the right or the wrong decision.  It is up to you.  You can do it.  One way or the other you will do something, might as well make it count!

Right now, I’m going to share some photos with you from my photo shoot with, Rookie, Drew Horner for Rodeo Fame Magazine.  Then I’m going to wash dishes– even though I don’t want to. ;) ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Hey Look at that, I’m in a photo!Image
The following photos are of Rodeo Fames inventory, owner, visionary, and Editor-in-Chief, April Bach-Patterson.  (Oldest Daughter of Allen Bach).
This Photo was taken right before our tire was stabbed to death by a curb and due to a long chain of events were stuck on the side of the road for hours!!! Oh the memories!  I’ll say one thing though, when this girl sets her mind to something, it gets done.  She’s pretty inspiring.

Much Love,

The strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws. – Barbara Kingsolver

We photographers have the incredibly amazing privilege of being personal historians for the families we photograph.  I have been made more and more aware of how deeply meaningful and important photographs are (more to come on this front soon).  Because we are historians of a very personal nature, the fabric of our existence often becomes wrapped up with those who we shoot.  It is something like a quilt where each session/person/family offers a new piece of fabric.  Some people leave a huge piece of fabric to be added to the quilt and some people leave a small piece of fabric.  No matter the size, though, each piece is unique and special– adding its own brilliance to the quilt as a whole.  So when I say that I am deeply and unreasonably luck to be able to do what I do I am not exaggerating.
———————————————————————————————–
The photos and story that I am about to share with you are incredibly personal.  This story is not my story, I am just the story teller.    This is Sarah’s story, and there is no doubt that Sarah has left a huge, vibrant piece of life’s fabric with me– she has touched my heart in more ways than she probably even realizes.  When I shot Sarah’s maternity session I knew very little about her– basically I knew that she was pregnant and adorable, so I was excited about the shoot.  Since then our acquaintanceship has grown into a friendship, and recently Sarah shared a very personal story with me.  It touched me so deeply that I asked her if I could share it here, to which she agreed.  The following story is only a small portion of the story she shared with me, but nevertheless, a personal, touching, and amazing story.  I hope that it touches you as much as it touched me.
This story starts in Dallas where Sarah and her husband, Nathan, and their son, Eli, were living at the time.  Sarah has suffered from a plethora of health problems through out her life and ended up miscarrying a baby– Rylie.  No doubt, this was an incredibly painful experience, but she had to find the strength to be resilient.  After the miscarriage her doctor explained to her that if she wanted more children she needed to try and have them soon, as she would probably not be able to have more children later on.
Considering all that she had already been through, I can’t even imagine the astonishment and joy she must have felt when she found out that she was not only pregnant with one child, but with two!  I also do not even have the ability to comprehend or imagine what she was going through when she found herself in an ambulance having another miscarriage.  There was no doubt about it, Sarah already knew she was going to lose her babies.  I’m sure there are no words to express the turmoil that must have been going on insider her knowing this was happening again!
Amazingly, she did not lose both babies, one of them survived!  The doctors determined that the cause of the miscarriage was a blood clot that had moved in a position that it separated one baby’s placenta from the uterine wall.  They also discovered there were two blood clots near the surviving baby threatening to do the same thing to him.  As if this weren’t enough there was an enlarged vein positioned in such a way that it was highly possible that it would burst.  If it did burst both Sarah and the baby would die.  They would lose so much blood immediately that there would be no chance of saving either of them.
Because Sarah was put on bed rest and was not allowed to pick Eli up, it was necessary for him to stay with relatives until her delivery.  So there she was facing an uncertain future for both her and her unborn baby, and all she could do was lay in bed.  That has to be the worst feeling– wanting to do something, and the only thing you can do is nothing.
The doctors told Sarah that there were two possibilities.  One was that as the baby grew the uterine wall would stretch and the blood clots would move away from the baby and the enlarged vein would move higher up and would no longer pose a threat.  The second possibility was that as the baby grew it would cause the vein and/or the blood clots to move exactly where they would do the most harm.
Miraculously, Sarah went in for on of her regular check ups and not only had the vein moved into a better position, but the blood clots were gone!  The result is an absolutely precious blue eyed baby boy who looks like his big brother,  Eli, who looks like his daddy– except their eyes those are definitely their mother’s.
I don’t think Sarah has even the slightest idea how much I admire her.  She is quite possibly the strongest person I have ever met.  She inspires me on a daily basis by just being herself.  She had had to go through more in her life than anyone I have ever met and yet she is still the most positive person I know.  It is beyond amazing that she has handled her hardships so gracefully and without becoming calloused.  Her baby’s are lucky to have such an amazing person to call “mom”, and though I don’t know Nathan that well it is my suspicion that he is pretty amazing too!
I hope that you enjoy the  following photos of a wonderful woman and a miracle pregnancy.  If you feel inspired to do so– please leave a little love for Sarah.  I will make sure she gets the message!

I think we might have caught a contraction here… She had her miracle baby less than 48 hours after this!

I am now shooting for a magazine!

When I was in college I wanted to start a magazine. I had notes and sketches and ideas for it (I still have them filed away somewhere). As life went on I found other things to pursue and starting a magazine never happened. Recently, however, something happened that puts me a little closer to that idea.
April Patterson, daughter of 4 time NFR Team Roping champion- Allen Bach, started a much needed magazine for the Rodeo industry– Rodeo Fame. The magazine covers a wide range of topics such as western fashion and equine advice, but focuses primarily on getting up close and personal with the pro rodeo guys and gals. It is really exciting to see this seed poke its head out of the soil and start to take root and bloom.
For the first issue I came on the team as a writer, but I am now also shooting for the magazine! I am really looking forward to adding this avenue to my career as a photographer and can’t wait to see what comes of it– besides the fact that I have been able to meet some really cool people! So, make sure to ask your local western store if they will be carrying Rodeo Fame Magazine… Trust me you will want to get your hands on a copy!

Our second issue is being printed as we speak, and will include some of my photos of Rookie, Drew Horner (Shown Bellow).

Much love,

Nick and Julie Part One

Meet Nick a fun loving guy who is happily in love with Julie, his now wife.

Meet Julie an equally fun loving girl who is happily in love with Nick, her now husband.

It is simple facts like this that make life wonderful.  It is the beauty of coincidence– or maybe even a little secret directing from God that perfect pairs like Nick and Julie find each other.  Nick had no idea that Julie existed when he saw her for the first time while she was visiting a friend in his hometown (several hours away from where she lived).  Now these two love-birds are enjoying life as newlyweds.  I will post their wedding photos soon, but for today I’m going to share their Bricktown engagement photos.

Little tip for Brides (or Grooms for that matter):  When you book a wedding photographer book them for you engagement session as well.  This will give you guys and the photographer a chance to work with each other and get to know each other before the big day, which can reduce a lot of stress for everyone! :)   Also, most wedding photographer offer packages with engagement photos included!

Much Love,
Megan

The life and times of life and time

Life never slows down, it never stops, and I really don’t think it ever gets easier.  I have always had a mindset, that if I can just keep on keeping on it will get better, or easier, or slower.  But I’m coming to terms with the fact that it doesn’t.  I could create a life where I could slow down, but that means that I would not be able to go on this amazing adventure of starting a business.  So instead of expecting life to change, I am working on being able to cope with the craziness more easily.  I’m learning how to prioritize a little better, though this often means that whatever task is most pressing is the one that gets done.  Sometimes the sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and organizing of my house often gets pushed further and further back and things keep piling up.  (Okay, that is most of the time– shhh don’t tell anyone).
Luckily for me my husband is super understanding, or at least incredibly patient about this. ;)   Patient husband or not, life and time fly by.  Before you even realize it the little people in your life are big people, some people are gone, and new people are here.  Before you know it you are in a completely different place and time then you were moments ago.  I hope that I can get better at cherishing every moment.  I want to enjoy simple things that are really amazing things., like the warmth of the sun.  I want to cherish every moment with my sweet husband, and love my family.  I want to take this time when life is crazy in one way and learn to cope and be flexible for when it becomes crazy in another way.
So here’s to Love, here’s to Life, and here’s to Loving Life.

You thought I was going to leave you without new photos didn’t you?  Well you were wrong! :)   Now that I can upload big, fancy photos I’m going to share some photos that I’ve been keeping from you.  Today I am going to share photos from my dad and Stephanie’s engagement session!  :)   I hope you enjoy them.

Mini Session Extraveganza

Hello friends,
I just wanted to let everyone know about my first ever Mini Session Extravaganza! It will be held in Lubbock, Texas on August 5-7. This is a great opportunity for busy families to get some great photos in a shorter time.
So how does it work?
Well, we will get together at a beautiful location (believe it or not, I know of some places in Lubbock that have green grass!!!). We will then take about an hour to get some great photos. Within the next few days I will enhance your photos and create a digital collection of 10 photos for you to choose your 2 11x14s and 8×10 metallic prints.
What if I have very rambunctious kids and I don’t think they will behave for photos?
My style of photography is great for rambunctious kids. I absolutely love true to life shots that capture your families personality. Of course we can get some traditionally posed portrait shots, but why stop there. I’m not afraid of capturing the amazing inquisitiveness that many children posses! Check out this session of a very inquisitive little boy. We got some wonderful shots and had a great time getting them… He just thought he was playing with a new friend– and maybe he was ;) .
What if I’m not photogenic?
A: Everyone says that and B: It’s just your job to be you and my job to make you look good… Which I’m sure you will ;)
What do I wear?
Most importantly something that you feel comfortable in, and that makes you feel good about yourself. When trying to coordinate photos for a group you don’t want to get to many people wearing busy patterns. If the patterns conflict it will be too much for they eye, if they are too matchy-matchy you might look like wall paper! Here are a few samples of cute outfits that work well together:

Be careful with too much white if it is a bright day because it can make everyone look like one big body with a bunch of heads! The above photo worked wonderful because it was an overcast day.

Earthy tones with bright accents.
Basically you want to think of a color scheme and go with that… But rules are meant to be broken when you know how to break them. If you think it looks great then chances are it probably will.
What if I want more than the three photos that come with the Mini Session Extravaganza?
No problem! I will compile a digital collection of 10 enhanced photos from which you can order as much as you want! I also offer canvas prints, greeting and holiday cards, metal prints, enlargements and much more!
Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to book a session. Remember there are limited spots so book your session quickly.

Charissa and Nathanael – Lubbock Family Photography

“To become a real boy you must prove yourself brave, truthful, and unselfish.”
– From “Pinnochio”

Being raised in a family of 3 sisters and having only one boy cousin on my dad’s side I am used to– well, girls. So, shooting Charissa and Nathanael was really fun to me. Little boys are just little bodies of energy and enthusiasm. Everywhere we went Nathanael was so excited to explore and check things out.
He was also incredibly smart. He is only 4, but he has a very large vocabulary maybe because his momma is a teacher;). To top it off this guy know his dinosaurs. Now I know you can say that about a lot of little boys, but Nathanael has a substantially sized dinosaur book in which he knows the names of every dinosaur!
When we were in the car driving to a new location he would show me a page with a dinosaur on it and say, “Do you know what this dinosaur is?” I could see the name printed pain as day on the page, but the names were so big, I couldn’t pronounce them so I would just tell him that I didn’t know, to which he would reply, “that’s a Parasaurolophus.” (Seriously can you believe a 4 year old can say words like that!)
When he finally landed on the page of a dinosaur who’s name I could say, I said, “That’s a Raptor.”
To which this little guy said, “OH! That’s right! GOOD JOB!!!” It was too cute. I have to say that his response probably says a lot about how encouraging of a mother Charissa is.
Anyway, I have a few photos to share– AND A VIDEO!!! Make sure you check it out HERE!

Priest/Huffhines Wedding- Hale Center Texas

Well, I know this is a little late for posting Victoria and Jeremy’s wedding, but you can’t say I didn’t warn you. I had a lot of sessions to keep up with lately, and one of my priorities is getting photos ready for clients as soon as I can. :)
The ceremony and reception took place at First Baptist Church in Hale Center, Texas, where Jeremy grew up. The ceremony was very sweet and included Jeremy playing the piano and singing a song he wrote for Victoria!

This is Victoria’s grandpa- I just love this moment!

Victoria and Jeremy hired Domesticakes in Lubbock to make their cakes. And let me tell you they were wonderfully beautiful! The grooms cake was a guitar! You can see that here.

This is Victoria’s niece. Isn’t she adorable?

More Van Darien

Hello everyone,
I am finally starting to reign in the masses of photos to sort, edit, and share so I figured I would do a quick blog post today. The following photos are from a live gig session at The Glass Cactus with the amazingly talented vocalist and song writer, Van Darien. Also playing with Van were the Hot As Love boys, a Rock roots 3 piece band from Ft. Worth. Personally I think they should just combine forces for good, because they all had great chemistry and fun together. I’ve seen Van play with quite a few people, but these guys were by far my favorite –HINT, HINT to the Hot As Love boys ;)
Van had me come out from Lubbock to shoot the show.  We all arrived to the gig early so everyone could get set up, which resulted in free time to get some portraits of Van before the show– MAKE SURE TO SCROLL DOWN TO SEE HER PORTRAITS– she is beautiful! And The Glass Cactus, it is such a beautiful venue, with class to spare so we got some great scenery and props too!
Anyway, that is enough of my rambling, now for the good stufff… It was hard to choose which photos to show here, so if you want to see more you can visit my facebook page here

Much Love,

Megan
